Feria de San Fermin: this “Feria de Pamplona” in Spain, is the largest in the world in affluence, and even, according to some, the third most popular festival in number of participants, after the Rio Carnival and the Oktoberfest of Munich.
The Feria de San Fermin is broken down into several major events:
- the Chupinazo (opening of festivities in jubilation, firecrackers and rockets)
- the parade through the streets in traditional dress (white dress, scarves and red belts)
- the bullfights
- the Encierro (release of bulls in the streets)
The San Fermin festivities begin on July 6th, at noon. This is the time when the chupinazo or rocket, which marks the official start of the festivities, is launched from the balcony of the town hall, provoking an explosion of joy of the crowd gathered in the square. The first race takes place the following day: at 8 am, the doors of Santo Domingo corral open, and hundreds of people run in front of the bulls following a journey through the old town that leads them to the bullring.
Every day from the 7th to the 14th of July, this brief and intense race takes place, which in just three minutes covers the 825 meters of the course. The program of activities also includes popular balls, concerts, dance performances, and of course bullfights, usually very animated in the stands by peñas.
